Pontypool Community Council is working to establish Community Woodlands in the Pontypool area.

We want to preserve and promote the native species in our environment, ensuring our green spaces continue for future generations and communities.

The Community Woodland Project is a joint venture between our Biodiversity Sub-Committee and external environmental partners and experts including local ecologists from Torfaen County Borough Council, Stump up for Trees, Local Places for Nature and Gwent Wildlife Trust.

The Community Woodland Project covers 3 areas of land in the Varteg.

This is a long term project. We’re taking steps to make the most of this wonderful natural space, right on our doorstep.

Some things we have already undertaken:

  • Ecology Survey – you can read more about the report in our Bio Minutes:

Some things are in now in progress with work starting in 2026:

  • Tree thinning and maintenance – contractors are working on cutting back gorse, thinning brambles and removing small saplings

And here’s what we hope to achieve in our long term plan:

  • Securing the boundaries

  • Bird and bat boxes

  • Creating an outdoor multi-function space
