National Nestbox Week 14-21 February

As part of National Nestbox Week, we thought it was the perfect time to update you on our own avian adventures; find out how you can support our feathered friends and get involved in other Biodiversity projects in 2026.

Build Your Own Bird Nest Box!

Build your own bird nest box! Join us on Thursday 19 February at Pontymoile Basin, 10am – 12pm

As part of the Pontypool Wild Spaces partnership, PCC and Gwent Wildlife Trust are bringing you a fun, hands-on workshop where you’ll create your very own bird nest box. It’s a great way to spend time together, learn new skills, and give our feathered friends a cosy home!

The session is now FULLY BOOKED, but you can still join the waitlist by clicking on the image below.

Swifts and House Martins

Last April, we installed 12 nestboxes in Pontypool Town Centre ready for nesting season and we’re pleased to now call Pontypool a Swift Friendly Town. As part of Phase 2 we’re broadening our search for swifts to the wider district. We hope to install a number of new nestboxes for both Swifts and House Martins and are currently exploring buildings in Garndiffaith, Abersychan and Griffithstown.

Just like Phase 1, callers and cameras will be installed at the various locations and you’ll be able to keep track or our findings on the Swift Box Project page.

Pontypool Wild Spaces

Have you heard about the Pontypool Pioneers? The gang meet once a month as part of the Pontypool Wild Spaces project. In 2025 we transformed the disused green space between George Street and Osborne Road, into a blossoming haven for wildlife; we planted wildflowers and installed a bee and bug hotel.

Earlier in the month, the team were busy making nest boxes for blue tits, which we’ll be putting up soon in time for spring ready for some new feathered residents.

Pontypool Wild Spaces is delivered in partnership with Gwent Wildlife Trust. Get involved with Pontypool Wild Spaces.

What's Happening in Varteg Woods

If you’ve been exploring the north of the district, you may have noticed a few changes in the Varteg Community Woodland area. We currently have some grassland works taking place on three woodland plots; this is just the first step in our plans to preserve and promote the native species in this environment and ensure green spaces like this continue for future generations and communities.

We’re a long way off nest boxes but it is really exciting to see work starting and plans moving forward. Read all our plans for Varteg Community Woodland.
